It Happens Every Time At This Time of the Year

So much is happening out back that I have not been blogging as I would like to. Daylilies have been crossed for the years ahead, vegetables are coming out of the garden and the blooms are beautiful. I am thankful to the Creator for all these good things.

The Seaweed Attraction

I read in one of my gardening books that seaweed was very beneficial for the garden. Last year I began placing the bounty of the bay into the tomato pots in the backyard. The result was phenomenal! Not only did I have a bumper crop but the tomatoes were so sweet. I went to the bay to get more today.

Before long I had an audience. Curiosity gets the best of people and finally they come over and ask, "Can you tell me what you are going to do with the seaweed? I'm sorry I just had to ask." I began to tell them of its many benefits (which I learned from the book, Organic Gardening and other sources).

1. It holds in moisture. While other places in the country on this 4th of July Weekend are getting rain, the next 10 days are supposed to be very dry here on Long Island. Watering is necessary and the moisture is trapped by the seaweed.
2. It provides nutrients to the soil. It also controls weed growth.
3. The salt is good for the tomato plants. Years ago Israel was drilling for water in the Negev. They hit warm springs. There was saline in the water. The outcome was the sweetest cherry tomatoes in the world.

As I shared this info with the ladies gathered around me, one of them went to get a bag to bring some home to her garden.

I kicked off my flip flops, let the bay come and soothe my feet as I gathered up yet another gift from our Father in Heaven, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.
