Raining

One of the gardeners' best friends is rain. It is so necessary. It gives a steady soaking from the heavens like irrigation cannot do. It aerates the earth. It cleanses. Although the rain is falling on Long Island today my outdoor birds were still waiting for their food at 6am this morning. When I arrived at the feeder by the pond it was crystal clear. The rain which fell last night had cleaned the pond.

My garden hose (the non tangle kind!) is out back but not is use this morning because the LORD is taking care of it. I am very thankful.

Planting

Yesterday I planted some wildflower seed and some Dianthus. I put one at the edge of the pond. Daylilies surround the pond but won't bloom for another 6 weeks. This gives it color until other perennials bloom there.

I love the way God created the heavens and the earth and then sustains His creation. I also love that while  we are here on earth we get to be a little creative with the gifts He has given.

Planting Seeds and Annuals

Today, right after lunch I am donning shorts and sneakers and heading out to do some gardening.
Got a 12 pack of annuals to put in, some wildflower seed to spread and loads of cleanup to do.
Happy Day!

The Next Day

Yesterday continued the spring clean up and a little bit of here and there work out back. Last night we got a nice steady rain. It has stopped now and the sun is trying to come out. This is what April is about on Long Island. April showers bring May flowers.

Of course we have had flowers for 2 months now. The crocuses are finished, the daffodils are beginning to wrap up their show and the tulips have just begun. The forsythia is now in full bloom along with many beautiful flowering trees.

The rain watered the earth, topped off the fish pond and cleared the air. As temperatures rise throughout the afternoon things will grow. God's amazing creation right in my own backyard is wonderful!

A Day In Spring In The Backyard

Today I went out in this yard I have written about here for over 7 years and filled the bird feeders, fed the birds, topped off the fish pond then moved some day lilies which the time they bloom in July have been  hidden under the shelter of my growing honey suckle and trumpet vine. Day lilies are best moved  in the fall but this was emergency surgery.

I had a meeting with a coworker this morning until noon. After a lunch meeting at the Peter Pan Diner I returned.

A couple of my grandkids came over and we did some more work like putting shells around a flowerbed. It look lovely.

Later I sat on the glider  with my two grandkids and watched quietly as the birds were all around us at the feeders. I explained which each one was. Maddie was on my lap. I asked her if she was enjoying herself and she nodded. Moments like these are some of the most precious in my life.

Its evening as I write. The grandkids are home and getting ready for bed. I am too actually! The cool spring air has done me in. I reflect for another moment about how wonderful it is to have a yard full of perennials and see those old friends each year at the same time. It is wonderful to share my yard with the fish and the foul and other guests. My spirit has been refreshed being out in my Father's World today!
