Mid Summer Patience

Okay, the annuals are tired. Some of the seeds you planted didn't come up. A borer got to your summer squash or maybe a squirrel ripped your corn off just before you were going to pick it.
Relax, it just means that you are a very typical gardener. The garden can be a challenge at times
I tell people all the time what they see in my yard are my successes. They don't see my failures... And trust me I have my share of them.

Here are a few ideas to lift your spirits and to give you some new beginning in this midsummer time.
1. Give your annuals a haircut. Trim them back. Your plants will become alive again with blooms.
2. Start a compost heap. This will become a gift that keeps on giving all year through.
3. Now is the time to start sizing up where you want to move perennials. I am bringing some tiger lilies to my folks home tomorrow.
4. Take some pictures of different shots of you yard. These will prove invaluable next year as you know where everything is!

There is a lot more you can do from planting seeds to getting some late bloomers and putting them in.

Have patience! It pays great dividend!

More Thoughts On The Rain From A Gardener's Perspective

It is raining off and on today. Weather.com says, "showers in the vicinity." I think this means it may rain but it may not. As I write this the sun just came out! Rain never bothers the Gardener's. While others complain we are happy about the Lord watering the earth which includes our yards! With all the rain this year, the backyard benefits greatly. We are thankful. A little gardening hint: collect the rain water in little cisterns of buckets. You can use it to add to your horse manure tea, compost ppile or watering cans. Once again we are singing in the rain!

Right In Your Own Backyard

Last evening we had the most beautiful rainbow following a thunderstorm.

Then after the rain the birds began to sing and this little guy came hopping across the path. When you have gardens and natural surroundings in it for local wildlife, you don't need to fimd them, they will find you! The great variety of birds, the shrews, toads and even the lady bugs all come for the things that are back there. The only thing I have ever stocked is the pond with fish. However we are going to be part of repopulating the Island with salamanders. Other than that everyone else is uninvited guests but very welcomed!

More Garden Surprises!

It is the time for surprises in the garden! Be looking for them. I had a few early this morning. One was a baby toad hopping along as I did some weeding. This little new life is a gift from God. It will live out back and enjoy the organic gardens filled with all kinds of good food for it and its brothers and sisters. Yes where there is one baby there are more!

While watering early this morning (heading up again tot he 90's on Long Island today), I was soaking the cucumbers and there was a beautiful Chinese cuke! I picked it and ate half of it immediately. The crunch was great! Crunchy due to its freshness.

So get outside in your garden. You will find all kinds of things you aren't even looking for! Enjoy this wonderful day!

Retrospective

If you are checking us out for the first time I encourage you to go to the archives and look at what has been posted there. Perhaps you will want to look at July Posts from previous years. That is a cool way to read and explore.

Today, many Daylilies are in bloom. One of the tadpoles has become a frog so each time you go to the pond he jumps in- very very cool. The toads were screeching last night and we have had all kinds of baby birds with their parents in the yard in the morning.

Come over and I'll take you on a tour!
